Obituary

ZELLA DEVORE HENSLEY (SHAFFER), 90, formerly of Burden, Kansas, passed away Friday evening, May 3, 2013 at the Katy Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy, Texas.

Born on February 18, 1923 in Milan, Kansas, she was the daughter of Marvin and Emma (Wahlenmaier) Devore. She was raised and received her education in Milan and later Atlanta, Kansas. Zella graduated from Atlanta High School in 1941. She later attended Wichita Business College in Wichita, Kansas.

She was united in marriage on May 16, 1943 to Delbert Jay Hensley in Wichita, Kansas. The couple lived several years in Wellington and in 1948 moved to Burden. In 1960 Zella began working at the Burden Bank and was employed there for 30 years. Mr. Hensley preceded her in death on May 23, 1986.

On September 13, 1989 she was united in marriage to Frank E. Shaffer in Atlanta. Zella worked for the City of Burden as the treasurer/secretary until 1990. Mr. Shaffer preceded her in death on February 25, 2007.

She was a member of the Burden Baptist Church for over 57 years and had served as the treasurer for 40 years. She also was a member of the church's Yak 'n Tack quilting. Zella enjoyed quilting, sewing and playing cards. Her favorite times were those spent with family and friends.

Her family includes:
Her daughter: Connie Seidel of Simonton, TX;
Her grandchildren: Carey Kingsbury and husband Eric, Tina Hoban and husband Ed, and Brian Curfman and wife Veselina; and
Her six great-grandchildren: Haley & Dylan Kingsbury, Lilith and Caitlin Hoban, and Aneis and Siena Curfman.
She is also survived by three step-sons and their families.
In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by her son, Donnie; her brother, Cecil Devore; and her sisters, Jessie Chesbro and Ruth Hensley.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Burden Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Burden Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Zella's name for the Burden Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
