William "Leonard" Lawrence, 89, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday afternoon, December 5, 2016 at William Newton Hospital.
Leonard was born and raised on a farm northeast of Udall, Kansas on February 15, 1927, the son of William and Norma (Sheeks) Lawrence. He attended Star Valley Grade School and graduated from Winfield High School in 1946 by a correspondence course after returning from the military.
Leonard was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 during the last months of World War II. He served in Germany as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon returning from the military in 1946, he made his home in Winfield.
He was employed at Jack Lane Chevrolet; then as a clerk at the Winfield Post Office, retiring after 30 years; owned and operated the Two Guys Lawn Mower Shop and most recently worked at Cates Supply, Inc.
Leonard married Juanita Thomas and they later divorced. On September 13, 1966, he was joined in marriage to Gloria Gornick Allen in Winfield. She passed away on September 13, 2011.
Leonard enjoyed hunting quail and pheasant. He was Past Commander of the local American Legion Post #10 and Past Master of the local Masonic Lodge #110. He received recognition for 65 years of membership in the Masonic Lodge. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Christian Church.

His brother: Melvin Lawrence and wife, Charlotte of Winfield;
His special friend: Charlene Brewer of Winfield; and
His 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Ward.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 9, 2016 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening, December 8, 2016 from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors that evening.
Memorials have been established in Leonard's name for the First Christian Church of Winfield and the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
