William "Joe" Condit, 89, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the Kansas Veterans Home.
Joe was born Billy Joe on August 15, 1931 in Arkansas City. He was the son of Eddie LeRoy and Evelyn Mae (Liles) Condit. He was raised and received his education in Winfield and was a member of the basketball and tennis teams. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1949. He then attended Kansas State University for a year and a half where he was a member of the K-State Basketball team. Joe joined the United States Navy in January 1951. He changed his name to William Joe when he entered the Navy. Joe proudly served his country and continued playing basketball for the Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in January 1955.
He married Donna Vermeulen on April 24, 1954. The couple had five children and later divorced. Joe worked for the postal service from 1960 to 1967. He married Guyla Jo Tharp in December 1967. The couple had a son and later divorced. Joe began his career as a banker in 1967. He worked at the United California Bank, First Interstate Bank, and Alameda First National Bank. He was an auto loan officer and was Vice President at Alameda First National. He retired in August 1996. He married Martha Jean Reece and following retirement, moved to Texas. In 2007, he moved to Winfield. Martha preceded him in death.
Joe enjoyed going to high school reunions and was a great bowler. He was an avid pool shark and beat Minnesota Fats once. He was a people person and loved to socialize.
His family includes his children, Bill (Bonnie) Condit of Winfield; Jody Weaver of Winfield; Paula (Breck) Schiff of Winfield; Kathy Blankenship of Winfield; Vicki Condit of Wichita; Todd (Toni) Condit of Vallejo, CA; his grandchildren, Erin (Matt) Lofgreen, Jordan (Ayumi) Condit, Jeremy Weaver, Amanda (Jake) Flower, Winter (James) Palmer, Buck (Leigh Ann) Verbeck, Heather (Nick) Holcomb, Alexandra Condit, Allisha (Kenny Stonecipher) Olson, Alexander (Jessica Gardner) Olson; his great grandchildren, Stresa, Isola, Brooklyn, Sebastian, Haze, Jadyn, Lilly, Kai, Talon, Tucker, Darius, Autumn, Maison, Khloe; his siblings, Madonna of Wichita; Lawrence Condit of Tucson, AZ; Debra of Offerle; Eddie Condit of Labanon, MO; and his special friend Virginia McConnell of Winfield.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Gerald, and a son-in-law Doug Weaver.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors during this time.
A memorial has been established in Joe's name for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
