Obituary

William Hoyt Black, 89, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, January 3, 2023, at his home.

Born November 14, 1933, in Toronto, Kansas, he was the son of William O. and Lyla (Adkins) Black. He was raised and received his education in Toronto, graduating high school in 1951. He then attended Kansas State University, where he met Joanne Cox. The couple were united in marriage on August 28, 1955, at the Methodist Church in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.

Upon graduation from Kansas State, he received an ROTC commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. That began a 20 year career where he served in several capacities, including a Navigator on cargo planes and refueling tankers, Commander of a Titan II Missile crew, faculty member of Air Command and Staff College, and was selected and assigned to a classified satellite project. In 1976, Bill retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel.

In 1978, they moved to Burden, Kansas, where Bill and his brother Darrell purchased a grain elevator and ag business, which they renamed Burden Farm and Ranch Center. After selling the business, Bill became a licensed Stock Broker for a number of years. In 2014, Bill and Joanne moved to Winfield.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield, United Methodist Men, and the Walnut Valley Men's Chorus. Bill enjoyed singing in choirs, golfing, and loved learning new things. He had a lifelong interest in studying the stock market.

His family includes his wife Joanne Black of Winfield; his children, Ronald Black and wife, Sara of San Antonio; Karen Kraemer and husband, Soren of West Des Moines, IA; his brother Darrell Black of Grove, OK; and his grandchildren, Michael Kraemer, Kevin Kraemer, Brittany Fischer, and Ira Kraemer.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister Anna Lou Newland.
