William E. "Bill" Long, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Saturday morning, October 22, 2011 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Born July 15, 1924 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Clarence and Veda (Smith) Long. He was raised and received his education in Winfield graduating from Winfield High School in 1942. After school he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country in World War II.
Bill was united in marriage to Dorothy T. Early on July 19, 1947 in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield where Bill began working for Thompson Lumber Yard. He remained at the lumber yard as it became Cullison's and later became the owner changing the name to Long Lumber Company. He continued owning and operating the lumber yard until retiring in 1984. After retiring he was a loving care taker to his mother-in-law, and later to his wife Dorothy. Mrs. Long preceded him in death on August 1, 2001.
He was a very active member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign War and the Kiwanis. He enjoyed traveling and woodworking.

His grandchildren: Jesse Long; Michael Long; Amy Long; Lindsey Foster; Wes Foster; Keith Long; and
His dear friend and companion: Beulah Shafer of Winfield.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim, Don and Clyde Long.
Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. A private family interment will be held at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, October 24, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4:00 to 7:00 that evening.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest a memorial in Bill's name for the American Legion in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
