Obituary

William Henry "Bill" Bernard, 96, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 2015 at his home.

Born June 18, 1918 on a farm near Geuda Springs, Kansas, he was the son of Leland Albert and Emma (Duncan) Bernard. The family later moved near Kellogg in Cowley County to the farm Henry's grandfather homesteaded in 1870. He attended Winfield and Arkansas City schools and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1935. He graduated from Arkansas City Junior College in 1937.

He entered the United States Army on April 8, 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged as a First Sergeant on October 20, 1945. Following his discharge he attended Kansas State University and started work with the Engineering Department of the Kansas Department of Transportation. He supervised building numerous highways throughout Cowley, Sumner and Sedgwick Counties.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Drake on June 6, 1948 at Grace United Methodist Church.

He later received his degree in Engineering from Scranton, Pennsylvania School of Engineering. After 39 years working as a civil engineer for KDOT, he retired in 1985. Following retirement, Henry supervised numerous projects with the City of Winfield and L.G. Pike Construction.

Henry was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, and served on many church committees. He was also an member of the Kiwanis Club and American Legion. His hobbies were restoring antique furniture and maintaining his home.

His family includes:

His daughters: Cheryl Schasteen and husband, Melvin of Gardner, Kansas; Karen Adams and husband, Herb of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Muriel Cowgill and husband, Bill of Lawrence, Kansas; His 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his siblings, Vager Bernard, Delore Bernard, Ruth Stone, Russell Bernard and Jean Huff.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace United Methodist Church. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery northwest of Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Monday evening from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

Memorials have been established in Henry's name for Grace United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Men. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
