WHEELER E. MARTIN, 78, of Mulvane, passed away early Monday morning, February 18, 2008, at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita.
Born on October 18, 1929, in rural Belle Plaine, he was the son of Frank and Mabel (Sewell) Martin. He was raised and educated in Belle Plaine graduating from Belle Plaine High School in 1947.
On March 15, 1954, he was united in marriage to Betty Lorraine Willis in Braman, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Udall and survived the 1955 Udall tornado. After the tornado, they moved to Wichita and lived there until 1969. Wheeler worked for Mid Kansas Savings and Loans and for South West National Bank in Wichita from the late 1950's until 1967. In 1967, he went to work for the United States Post Office in Wichita. In 1969, the couple moved to Belle Plaine where they lived until 1977 when they moved to Oxford to live on a farm, and later moved into town. Wheeler retired from the Post Office in 1992. Betty preceded him in death on November 19, 2000.
In 1951, Wheeler joined the United States Army. He was in the 3rd Armor Division and stationed in Europe after WWII. He was part of the Occupation Forces. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield. He was also a member of the Wichita Optimist Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed collecting model cars and Lionel trains. He also enjoyed playing cards, traveling and driving somewhere new.

His sons: Dwayne A. Martin and wife Beverly of Mulvane; and Greg E. Martin and girlfriend, Sandi Yadon of Belle Plaine; and
His grandchildren: Lauren Nicole Kerby and husband John of Wichita and Eric Martin of Belle Plaine.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a half brother, Harold Martin.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Belle Plaine Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Online condolences may be made at www.milesfuneralservice.com.
Memorials have been established in Wheeler's name for Villa Maria Nursing Home in Mulvane and for Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
