Obituary

Werner Alfred Grunwald, 97, of Winfield, Kansas and Pearland, Texas went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on July 14, 2025.

He was born in Golm, Germany by Potsdam on March 3, 1928 to Albert Leopold and Karolina (Buchnia) Grunwald.  He was known as "Bushy" or "Weis Kohl" because of his beautiful mop of golden hair.  He attended all schools in Golm.  After World War II, Werner attended trade school in Berlin.  He did upholstery work in Park Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, built by Frederick the Great.

Werner is a book to be written!  He was the youngest of five children: Martha, Kurt, Heinz, and Helmut.  He came to America in 1956, and was sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield.  It was through mutual friends that Werner met the love of his life, Lillian May Rising.  They married on August 19, 1961 at the former United Brethren Church in Winfield.

Werner worked for various painting companies in the Winfield and Wichita area.  He also worked for the State of Kansas painting highway bridges.  In 1961, Werner started his own business, Grunwald Painting, Inc.  He served the Winfield community and surrounding area.  He literally "painted the town" for over 60 years, retiring in 2020 at the age of 92.

He was a friend to everyone!  Werner loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren.  He and Lillian traveled the entire USA.  He loved being an American since 1966.  Lillian preceded him in death on September 16, 2003.

Werner is survived by his daughter Nancy Potter and husband, Lewis; his grandchildren, Meredith Laurel and husband, Nathan Woloshin; Andrew Lewis Werner Potter; and Lillian Grace Karolina Potter; his nieces, Regina Grunwald Zandeck of Potsdam, Germany; Bettina Grunwald of Golm, Germany; and his great niece and great-great niece of Berlin.

In addition to his parents and wife, Werner was preceded in death by his siblings and his nephew Martin Grunwald.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, July 25, 2025 at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship in Winfield under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.  Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.  A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M.  The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 P.M.
