Akers
September 9, 1929 – February 24, 2020
Ward L. Akers, age 90, of Springfield, Illinois, beloved father, and grandfather, passed away February 24, 2020.
He was born September 9, 1929, in Winfield, Kansas to Wiley and Lela (Rising) Akers. Ward married Jeanette Nelson on August 23, 1952, in Oak Park, Illinois.
Ward received his Bachelor's degree from Southwestern College and Master's degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts. He worked as an environmental engineer for the E.P.A. for over fifty years. Ward was a member of the NRA, Sangamon County and Menard County Ducks Unlimited, K & O Steam and Gas Engine Club, and a Life Member of Abe Lincoln Gun Club.
He enjoyed keeping in touch with extended family and many friends, and most of all, he looked forward to vacation at Beaver Lake in Arkansas every year. He spent most of that time on his boat with his children, grandchildren and several extended family members joining him.
Ward is survived by his two children, daughter, Ruth (Akers) Hibbs, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and son, Carl Akers of Springfield, Illinois; four grandchildren, Jenne Hibbs, Jesse Hibbs, Taylor Akers and Trevor Akers; sister, Ruth (JR) Majors of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette Akers; sisters, Lois Biby and Marjorie Akers; and brother, Bruce Akers.
A burial service will be held at Tisdale Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas on September 10, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. Local arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
