W. Elaine Bumgardner, 84, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Winfield Senior Living.
Born September 2, 1938, in Bigelow, Kansas, she was the daughter of Howard Chester and Wilma Edra (McDonald) Sparks. She was raised and educated in Marysville, attending Lincoln Grade School, Central Junior High, and graduating from Marysville High School in 1956. As a young woman, Elaine worked as a waitress at various restaurants. She later went to work for Burger King in Winfield, retiring as Assistant Manager in 2003.
Elaine was united in marriage to Jackie Neil Bumgardner on June 7, 1980, in O'Neill, Nebraska. The couple made their first home in O'Neill. They moved to Burden in 1995 to be near family. Jackie preceded her in death on November 24, 2012.
Elaine was a member of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, and reading.
Her family includes her son Rick Stewart and wife, Terry of Arkansas City; her daughters, Cricket Stephenson and husband, Russell of Udall; Sunshine Fortner and husband, Ron of Arkansas City; her step-daughter Brenda Bumgardner of Orchard, NE; her sister Bonnie J. Beckman of Marysville; her brothers, Douglas L. Flin and wife, Judy of Colorado; Ronald L. Sparks and wife, Debbie of Kanopolis; her 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elaine was preceded in death by a son Danny L. Stewart, and three brothers, Duane Sparks, Larry Sparks, and Riley Sparks.
Private family services will be held at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial has been established in Elaine's name for the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
