Virginia
Yianakopulos
November 15, 1928 – June 18, 2021
Virginia Yianakopulos gracefully exited this world to join her Savior for the next portion of her spiritual journey on June 18, 2021. Virginia succumbed to heart failure during her 92nd year while residing at the Loving Care of McPherson, Kansas.
She was born Patricia Virginia Morgan on November 15, 1928, to her parents, William Morgan and Fannie (Brooks) Morgan of Arkansas City. She grew up and attended school in Arkansas City with her many brothers and sisters. For many years, she believed her name was Virginia Lee Morgan until she learned the physician who delivered her had chosen Patricia as her first name, unbeknownst to her parents.
A young sailor named Nicolas caught Virginia's attention while the country was struggling through World War II. The Navy needed Nick in the Pacific, and the young couple had to wait until he received his Honorable Discharge in 1944. They were married on June 16, 1944, in Newkirk, Oklahoma. To this union were born children, Larry, Sharon, and Charlotte.
Life's adventures led Virginia and Nick from Winfield to Derby, Metairie, Louisiana, Huntsville, Alabama, Seattle, Washington, and back to Winfield. Her work experience included working for Sonner Burner during WWII, Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, a Louisiana Tupperware warehouse and Schwegmann's Grocery, and finally at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. Virginia retired in 1992.
During her working life, Virginia found many needs in the community that she tried to meet. She bought shoes for co-workers, groceries for neighbors, fed the many neighborhood kids, volunteered for charities, and spent many hours undertaking projects for the church and the developmentally disabled. In addition, she and Nick supported many children living in poverty-stricken countries.
A vacation to Europe provided Virginia and Nick with new and exciting experiences in England, Italy, and Greece. She always talked about the unusual foods and the great cultural differences that she had the privilege to experience.
Virginia was a dedicated Christian reading her Bible daily. She was a long-term member of the Winfield Free Methodist Church and was once honored as their Mother of the year. She later joined her new spiritual family at the Winfield Assembly of God.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Nicolas Billy Yianakopulos, in 2010, daughter Sharon Yianakopulos in 2019, her daughter-in-law Sandy Yianakopulos in 2021, and many brothers and sisters. Survivors include son Larry Lee Yianakopulos, Sr. of McPherson, and daughter Dr. Charlotte Yianakopulos-Veatch of Rocky Ford, Colorado, spouse Richard Veatch. Grandchildren are Larry Lee Yianakopulos, Jr. of Granite, Kansas, spouse Debbie, Jimmy Dale Yianakopulos of McPherson, Scott Yianakopulos of Wichita, spouse Lisa, Kyger N. Veatch of Winfield, spouse Nicole, and Ian Veatch of Pueblo, CO. She has 14 great-grandchildren and has one great-grandchild that preceded her in death. Virginia is also survived by her sister, Sara Justice of Arkansas City, and brother, James Morgan of Cameron, MO. Virginia leaves extraordinary friends who have spent many hours helping her in the later years of life, Kimberly Imel of Arkansas City, neighbor Marti Daniels, and Robin Lebeda, both of Winfield. She leaves too many nieces, nephews, and friends to mention that she loved.
The family wishes to send a special thanks to the staff at Loving Care that took care of her over the past two years. They took care of Virginia and became her friends and family during the pandemic and for this, we are grateful. They were very special to her and she loved them dearly.
Funeral services are scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. The casket will be open from 8:30 A.M. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, Virginia requested that contributions be donated to the Eagle Nest in Winfield. She volunteered many hours there and believes they do God's work for the less fortunate in our community. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
She will be greatly missed.
