VIRGINIA BAKER BOYD, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Friday morning, March 29, 2013 at Cumbernuald Village surrounded by family.
Born March 5, 1923 in Wellington, Kansas, she was the daughter of Marvin S. and Mineva (Ziegler) Baker. She was raised and educated in Ark City, Lawrence, and Winfield. Virginia graduated Winfield High School in 1941.
She was united in marriage to Samuel L. Boyd on April 20, 1940 in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple lived in Winfield for a number of years and later in Kechi. Samuel preceded her in death on July 25, 2005. Virginia moved back to Winfield following Samuel's death. She worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and for a cabinet maker for a short time. She made her lifelong career doing alterations and tailoring, first at Calvert's and Kerr's, and later her business, Virginia's Alterations and Tailoring for close to 30 years.
Mrs. Boyd was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield as well as the Soroptomists. She was active in the community theatre. Virginia was a girl scout leader and volunteer trainer of leaders in the 1950's. She was an art student of Clayton Staples at Fairmont College and later Sue Jean Covacevich. She was a founding member of the Winfield Art Center. She loved art, painting and sculptures. She also enjoyed making miniature doll house furnishings and dolls. She loved raising her family and spending time with them.

Her daughters: Elizabeth Vaughan and husband, Willie of Winfield; Dianna Zampieri of Emporia; Kathryn Langrehr of Kechi; Gretchen Gropper and husband, Jim of Winfield; and Cheryl Ann Griffin of Sedalia, Missouri;
Her brother: Steve Baker of Texas; and
Her 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Inurnment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Virginia's name for Victory in the Valley. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
