Virginia Ann Atkins, 92, longtime Burden, Kansas resident, passed away Thursday morning, September 3, 2026, at Winfield Senior Living.

Born on January 17, 1934, in Cambridge, Kansas, she was the daughter of Emory and Dorothy Lucile (Adkins) Lewis. Her family moved to Burden in 1945 where she was raised and received her education. She graduated from Burden High School in 1952.

She was united in marriage to William R. Atkins on July 5, 1953, in Burden. The couple had two children and later divorced.

Virginia worked as a keypunch operator for many years at Boeing, and Cessna in Wichita, and Binney and Smith in Winfield. She also worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She later became a caregiver at Starkey’s in El Dorado, where she remained until retiring. Virginia enjoyed painting, looking through pictures, making photo albums, watching birds, being in nature, and spending time with her family.

Her family includes her son Steven Richard Atkins and wife, Betsy of Burden; her daughter Sueann Oliphant-Duff and husband, Jerry of Burden; her sister Marilyn Plain of Wichita; her brother Donald Lewis of Wichita; her sister-in-law Eva Lewis of Sunset, TX; her grandsons, Dustin Atkins and wife, Missy; Dillon Atkins; Dawson Atkins and wife, Becky; Ernest Oliphant and fiance Rebecca; her granddaughters, Darla Meyer and husband, Michael; Olivia Tokarz and husband, Sean; her great grandchildren, Avy, Conner, Keely, Hannah, Kylie, Lukas, Isabella, Linkon, and Bruce.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by two brothers Marvin Lewis and Emory Lewis, her sister-in-law Jane Lewis, and her brother-in-law, Berton Plain.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Cambridge Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers the family requested memorials in Virginia’s name for First Baptist Church of Burden. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
