Obituary

Viola G. Schreiner, 101, formerly of Oxford, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, December 16, 2021, at Winfield Senior Living.

Born November 6, 1920, in Elk City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Elmer E. and Lillie May (Berry) Schwatken.  She was raised and received her education in Elk City, graduating from Elk City High School in 1939.

Viola was united in marriage to LaVerne F. Schreiner on July 18, 1939, in Independence, Kansas.  The couple made their first home on a farm in Elk City before moving to a farm in Renfrow, Oklahoma.  In addition to being a homemaker, Viola worked as a caretaker while in Renfrow.  In 1959, the family moved to Oxford, Kansas.  While in Oxford, Viola earned a certificate as a Certified Medical Assistant and began working at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.  She remained at the state hospital for over 20 years, retiring in 1982.  Viola and LaVerne enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and wintering in the valley in south Texas.  Mr. Schreiner preceded her in death on February 2, 2011.  Viola enjoyed quilting, flower gardening, and collecting antique dishes.

Her family includes her son Vernon Schreiner of Houston, TX; her daughters, Judy Nixon and husband, Lyndell of Conroe, TX; Brenda Bird and husband, Dean of Augusta; Darlene Phillips and husband, William of Winfield; her grandchildren, Troy Nixon and wife, Lisa of Pearland, TX; Travis Nixon and wife, Karen of Euless, TX; Jason Bird and wife, Heather of Augusta; Kristy George and husband, Steve of Augusta; Tiffany Parsons and husband, Max of Winfield; Lindsay Godfrey and husband, Chris of North Augusta, SC; Katherine Nelson and husband, Ray of Sheridan, OR; her great grandchildren, Dana Nixon, Ryan Nixon, Cailey Nixon, Courtney Nixon, Gabby Trevino, Olivia Trevino, Emi Bird, Wyatt Bird; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Viola was preceded in death by her seven siblings, Herman Schwatken, Vadis Schwatken-Kimrey, LaVona Troutman, Ava Crowell, Paul Schwatken, Ruby Moore, and Laura Powell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.  Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City.  A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 8 P.M.  The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Viola's name for the American Diabetes Association.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
