Obituary

VERNON E. CROW, 73, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, January 3, 2010 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Born on April 26, 1936 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Norman F. and Nellie S. (Workman) Crow. He was raised and received his education in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1953.

He was united in marriage to Norma J. Crow on April 4, 1954 in Winfield. A short time later, Mr. Crow enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country in the Korean War and served on the USS Boston. Following his honorable discharge, Vernon returned to Winfield. He was employed at Shenneman's Meats as a meat cutter. In 1960, the couple moved to Wichita, and he worked at Boeing Aircraft as a machinist and also at Dillon's as a meat cutter. The couple returned to Winfield in 1970 and Vernon owned and operated Daylight Donuts. He later was employed at Gordon Piatt as a machinist and retired in 1986. Mrs. Crow preceded him in death on April 7, 1983.

Vernon was a member of the American Legion Post #10, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3544, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. He loved training race horses and drove start cars for horse races. He also enjoyed bluegrass music and playing the harmonica, banjo and piano.

His family includes:
His sons: Norman and wife Deb of Winfield, KS; and Marlon and wife Dawn of Oxford, KS;
His daughter: Christy Besett and husband Jimmy of Haslet, TX;
His brothers: Darrell Crow and wife Loyce; and Dean Crow all of Winfield, KS; and
His grandchildren: Kasey, Kari, Casey, Kylie, Tiffany, Zane, Craig Mayo and wife, Alicia, and Lindsay Parsons and husband, Scott; and
His great grandchildren: Evan, Conner, Daisy and Gunner.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Crow.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Military committal honors will follow at Union-Graham Cemetery.
