Verle Leon Goodnight, 78, of Orange Park, Fla., formerly of Winfield, passed away July 1, 2015, in the Orange Park Medical Center.
Verle was born April 12, 1937, in Winfield, to Claude and Evelyn Goodnight. As a young man, he farmed with his father. He received his higher education at Cowley County Community College, Pittsburgh State College and Southwestern College. He later served in the United States Air Force where he earned his honorable discharge.
He and Harriet M. Zimmerman married Oct. 1, 1977, in Spring Lake, Mich. His expertise in sales, accounting, service work and consulting kept them both on the move to many new jobs in numerous states.
Verle was an elder in his church as well as a volunteer at the Orange Park Medical Center. He also was the veteran volunteer representative at Haven Hospice Care Center of Orange Park and a member of the Clay County Literacy Coalition.
He loved life and lived it with vitality. His sense of humor and quick wit were appreciated by all who knew him. His service to his community gained him the respect of his peers. He was a humble man who loved his family and professed his strong faith in God.
In addition to his parents, after many wonderful years together, Verle was preceded in death by his wife Harriet Goodnight in April 2012; son Ty Leallen Goodnight; stepson James P. Zimmerman and sister-in-law Dorothy Dart.
Survivors include his stepson and daughter-in-law, John and Onalee Zimmerman, Hale, Mich.; brother-in-law Arie Boon and wife Joann, Grand Haven, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hughey, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Nancy Boon, Nunica, Mich.; and a number of grandchildren and cousins.
A Memorial service including Military Committal Honors will be held at Miles Funeral Service on August 4, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. Private inurnment will take place before the service at Highland Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers those desiring to remember him and his life make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
