Obituary

Verla Whiteman, 93, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 3, 2021 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Born February 25, 1928 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Ralph and Mattie (Bonnel) Sphar.  She was raised and received her education in Cambridge, Burden, and Atlanta.  Verla graduated from Cambridge High School in 1946.

She was united in marriage to James "Russell" Whiteman on December 10, 1945 in Winfield.  The couple lived in Atlanta and Cambridge before making their home in Burden in 1993.  Verla worked in food service at Central USD 462 in Burden.  She also made a career being a homemaker and housewife.  Russell preceded her in death on August 20, 2013.

She was a member of Cambridge Presbyterian Church.  She enjoyed her church family and gardening.  She especially loved fishing and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda Bartel and husband, Roger of Cambridge; Darlene Flegler and husband, Bill of Ponca City, OK; her daughter-in-law Dorothy Whiteman of Cambridge; her grandchildren, Karen Bannister and husband, Les, Shawn Bartel, Marty Whiteman, Brady Bartel and wife, Missy, Halli Paslay and husband, Preston; her sister Jewell Hendrickson and husband, Wayne of Garden City, MO; her brother-in-law Earl Whiteman of Sun Lakes, AZ; her sisters-in-law, Eunice Mullen of Oklahoma; Arlene Otto of Burden; her 18 great grandchildren, Melissa (Jesse Bloomdahl) McMichael, Tyler (Maranda) McMichael, Lucas McMichael, Jeremy (Amanda Coon) Whiteman, Jasiah Johnson, Morgan Whiteman, Harper Bartel, Dalin Bartel, Scarlett Bartel, Kaylie Murry, Austin Paslay, Hayden Wolfe, Shelby, Kylie, and Lane Bannister, Kaden, Cash, and Kyall Paslay; and her great-great grandchildren, Kennedy and Fallon Bloomdahl, Chance, James, Flint, and Emmalynn Whiteman, Beckett McMichael, Keagan Whiteman, Blakely and Stella Bannister.

In addition to her parents and husband, Verla was preceded in death by a son Ronnie Whiteman, a grandson James Richard Whiteman, a granddaughter Amy Whiteman, a great granddaughter Kayla McMichael, a great-great granddaughter Grayce McMichael, and a nephew Chet Hendrickson.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 9, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service.  Private inurnment will take place at Cambridge Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established in Verla's name for Cambridge Presbyterian Church.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
