VERA W. KING, 100, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 5, 2011 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.
Born on July 6, 1910 in Caldwell, Texas, she was the daughter of Ben and Lula L. (Lawrence) Wallace. Vera was educated in the Oklahoma school system. She earned her Bachelors degree from Langston University and her Masters degree from NYU. She did post-graduate study at Brooklyn College, City College and St. Johns University. She retired from teaching and administration from the New York City Public School System in 1978.
She was united in marriage to Ashton Williams of Chicago, Illinois for 31 years. They adopted a son, Jimmy, who preceded his parents in death in 1970.
Vera married Raymond King in 1975 and the couple lived in Los Angeles, California until he preceded her in death in 1989.
On February 2, 1992 she was united in marriage to John M. Harris with whom she had a close relationship in her high school and college years. John preceded her in death on May 3, 1999.
Vera accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica, New York where she served as General Secretary, Church School Teacher and Secretary of the Christian Education Committee. She joined the Second Baptist Church in Winfield. Vera was a life member of the Langston University Alumni Association. She served on the Big Sister Education Action Center Board of Directors and organized Troops of the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America. She had traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean.

Her brothers: Eugene Wallace of Kansas City, MO; and Floyd "Cecil" Wallace of Leavenworth, KS; and
A host of stepchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, adopted son, Jimmy; her sisters, Marjorie Cochran, Eulalia Greer and Jewel Wallace; and her brothers, Adron, Emmitt and Leland "Jack" Wallace and infant E.V.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., at the funeral home on Friday, February 11, 2011.
A memorial has been established in Vera's name for the Second Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
