Thomas J. Vargas, Sr., 77, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital.
Born March 7, 1949, in Winfield, he was the son of Cruz J. and Susana (Barron) Vargas. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, attending Winfield High School.
Tommy married Patricia Howard in 1968, and to this union, two sons were born, Thomas Joe, Jr., and Troy. The couple later divorced. He was united in marriage to Marcia Crome on February 11, 1978. The couple made their home in Winfield where Tommy worked as a sandblaster and in maintenance for Gordon Piatt. He then worked in maintenance at Southwestern College where he remained until retiring. Marcie preceded him in death on November 13, 2022.
Tommy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed collecting pecans, mowing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, Thomas J. Vargas, Jr.; Andrew Vargas (Angela), Ben Vargas (Brandy); Nathan Vargas (Santi); and Cody Vargas (Ryann); his father Cruz J. Vargas; his siblings, Richard Vargas; Mike Vargas (Renee); Mary Green (Norman); Nina Smith; his grandchildren, Andrew, Cooper, Adelyn, Jackson, Cole, Julian, Adrian, Aliyana, Rider, Malachi, Adonis, Cameron, Kyle, Tristan, Chandler, Mercedes, Lydia, Anevay, Xavier; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his mother and wife, Tommy was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Carlos, and a son Troy Vargas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Tommy’s name for Trinity Lutheran School. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
