Obituary

Thelma Fern (Floyd) Eastman, 102, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Monday morning, June 27, 2016 at Winfield Rest Haven.

Born August 31, 1913 in a tent in a wheat field east of Wellington, Kansas, she was the daughter of John Mayfield and Mary (Chance) Floyd. She was raised in Rock, Kansas and received her education in Douglass, where she graduated from Douglass High School.

Thelma was united in marriage to Leo Eastman on August 31, 1933 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. To this union, five children were born, Patricia Ann, Jack Robert, Peggy Jean, Ronald Leo and Donald Dean. The couple made their home in Winfield. In 1970, they began enjoyed the rural life when they moved to a mobile home in their son, Ronald's backyard. Thelma loved being outdoors, working in her garden or with her flowers. She proudly displayed her ribbon-winning garden produce at the Cowley County Fair for many years. She spent countless hours preparing and canning her garden produce, which provided food for her family throughout the years. She also enjoyed taking care of her chickens. When they reached the end of their production time, she would dress and freeze them for her family. Leo preceded her in death in 2000. Thelma remained at home until August 2014 when she moved to Winfield Rest Haven.

Thelma loved to read, and trace her and Leo's family trees. She enjoyed collecting and looking at family photos. She loved piecing and embroidering quilts by hand and crocheting afghans. She especially loved taking care of and spending time with her family. She spent years taking care of her nieces following the deaths of their mother and caring for her invalid mother.
