Obituary

Sylvia E. Scott, 90, formerly of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, October 7, 2013 at St. John Leisure Homestead in St. John, Kansas.

Born September 25, 1923 in Andover, Kansas she was the daughter of Louis Kirby and Sylvia Elizabeth (Stephenson) Comstock. She moved as a small child with her parents to a farm in Lookout Valley, then north of Wauneta. She attended first through seventh grade at Wauneta Elementary School. She attended Junior High and High School in Cedar Vale, graduating from Cedar Vale High School in 1941. Following graduation she moved to California and then returned to Cedar Vale to work for the Farmers Cooperative Market as a bookkeeper and assistant cashier from late 1941 to 1943.

Sylvia was united in marriage to James Hubert Scott on February 12, 1944 in Wichita, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Wichita where Sylvia worked in the accounting department at Boeing Aircraft until 1945. The couple then moved to Cedar Vale then to a farm north of Wauneta "Ross Place". They later purchased a farm in and moved to Lookout Valley, "Old Oliver Place" in 1950. She later went to work for Dr. Hays Outpatient Clinic for five years and worked at the Ark City Clinic as a medical assistant until retiring in 1963 to become a full time "farmer assistant". Mr. Scott preceded her in death in 2003.

She was a member of the of the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. She was baptized February 24, 1952. She taught fourth grade Sunday School Class, Co-sponsored Senior BYF with her husband, and served over 30 years as treasurer of the church.

Her family includes:
Her son: Dennis E. Scott and wife, Linda of Independence;
Her daughter: Janice E. Mattocks and husband, Jerry of St. John;
Her brother: Thomas Comstock of Cedar Vale; and
Her 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her sisters, Luella, Edna, Dorthea and Virginia, and her brothers, Frank, Wallace, Claude and Louis.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale, Kansas. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 1:00 to 5:00.

Memorials have been established in Mrs. Scott's name for St. John Leisure Homestead and for the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
