Sylvia L. Griffith, 75, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, March 31, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Winfield.
Born November 2, 1938 in Webster County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Alfred and Lillian Nahnsen. She was raised and received her education in Webster County. She worked at the high school, punching lunch tickets as a teenager. She then worked as a teacher, teaching in both third and fourth grades. Sylvia was united in marriage to Elmer Griffith on February 18, 1963 in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in Winfield, Kansas and Sylvia stayed home to raise their children. She would later work at Cessna for over 14 years until her husband became ill and she left work to take care of him. Mr. Griffith preceded her in death in 2001. After Mr. Griffith's passing, Sylvia went to work for the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, where she remained until retiring.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the VFW, and served as the District President in the late 70's. Sylvia volunteered at the Kansas Veterans Home for many years in the activities department. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening.
Her family includes: Her brothers: Stanley Nahnsen and wife, Blanch of Harcourt, IA; Harvey Nahnsen of Wisconsin; Luther Nahnsen and wife, Charlene of Fort Dodge, IA; Elvin Nahnsen and wife, Dorothy of Harcourt, IA; Her stepchildren: Sonny Rylant and wife, Sandy of Belle Plaine; Kathy Russell and husband, Kyle of Derby; Eugenia Moore and husband, Tim of Derby; and Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Sylvia is preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Marie Griffith, and two sons, Brian Griffith and Paul Griffith.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Sylvia's name for the Kansas Veterans Home Activities Fund and for the VFW Post #3544.
