Steven Michael Showalter, of Winfield, KS, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 8, 2023, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield, at the age of 66. He was born February 10, 1957, in Pittsburgh, PA, to James and Mary Jane Brady Showalter.

He married the love of his life, Margaret (Maggie) Eileen Angle, in 1988, and they were married for 30 years until her passing in 2018. Steve joined the Army at the age of 19 and served in Korea and Germany. He started his law enforcement career in 1984 at the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, KS, worked in Norton, KS for a short time, transferred to Winfield, KS, and retired at the rank of Captain in 2009. After his retirement, he served First Council Casino in Newkirk, OK as Security Supervisor until 2012.

Steve was an avid fisherman, gun enthusiast, seasoned grill master, skillful storyteller, and prideful cultivator of his lawn. He was a diehard Steelers fan and joined Chiefs Kingdom in his later years. His gruff demeanor at work was always balanced by a gentle devotion to Maggie and their pets at home.

Steve is survived by one sister, Susan Button of Overland Park, KS; four children, Melissa (Ryan) Showalter Wentzel of Ephrata, PA, James (Kelli) Button of Emporia, KS, Michael Button of Tulsa, OK, and Sharon Robertson of Charlotte, NC; eleven grandchildren, five nieces, and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one brother, Patrick Showalter.

A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Military committal honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.
