Obituary

STANLEY L. JENKINS, 84, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2008 at his home.

Born on June 6, 1924 in Floral, Kansas, he was the son of Samuel Madison and Minnie Mae (Bates) Jenkins. He attended elementary school in Floral and later graduated from Winfield High School in 1942. Stanley attended Southwestern College and St. John's College.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Jenkins was proudly inducted into the United States Army in 1943. He received three bronze stars and served as Company L in the 413th regiment of the 104th Infantry Division. Mr. Jenkins was a Prisoner of War in Germany from November of 1944 until April of 1945. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he served in the Army Reserves until 1947 and then later in the Kansas Army National Guard. In 1968, he was called to active duty and served in Vietnam with the Army 1st Cavalry. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1971.

Over the years, Stanley had been employed at C.R. Anthony's , US Dept. of Agriculture, US Army Corp of Engineers, Joe Collins Buick-Rambler, Bodkins Motors and later Bodkins Manufactured Homes.

Stanley was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Winfield. He also was a member of the American Legion Post #10 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3544. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #110 for 50 years, and was affiliated with the Wichita Consistory. Stanley also was a member of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club, the National Guard Association and was a charter member of the Cowley County Civil Defense.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herschel Jenkins.

Military and Masonic committal honors will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 11, 2008 at Highland Cemetery in Winfield.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Stanley's name for the First Church of the Nazarene Building Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
