Shirley L. Shelton, 75, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born September 27, 1941 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Donald and Nina (Orr) Brooks. She was raised and educated in Burden. In 2010, Shirley was honored to finish her high school education.
Shirley was united in marriage to Larry A. Shelton on April 29, 1988 at the IXL Baptist Church in Arkansas City. The couple made their home on Shirley's family's homestead in Burden. As a young woman, Shirley worked as a waitress and at Binney & Smith. She later worked for McBeth's Saddle Shop in Burden and as a cook at the Dexter Schools. She raised dogs for over 60 years. She and Larry owned and operated Valley View Kennel in Burden.
Shirley was a member of Dexter Christian Church as well as American Quarter Horse Association and Pet Producers of America. Shirley bred and trained Palamino Quarter Horses. She enjoyed gardening and canning and especially loved raising horses and dogs.

Her brother: Gene Brooks and wife, Heike of Burden;
Her 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren on the way, her aunt, many cousins, nieces and nephews; and
Her loyal K9 companion: Ginger.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by an infant son, Kenneth and a brother, Edward Brooks.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at Dexter Christian Church in Dexter, Kansas. Interment will follow at Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Shirley's name for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and for the Shriner's Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
