Shirley Jane Selenke, 88, of Oxford, Kansas, passed away Sunday evening, April 21, 2024, at Joy Home in Oxford.
Born July 14, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Harlan G. and Mabel (O'Neal) Cooper. Her family moved to San Francisco, California for a short time while Shirley was a child, before moving to Wichita, Kansas. Shirley was raised and received her education in Wichita, graduating from Plainview High School in 1954.
She was united in marriage to Leo Pius Selenke on September 3, 1955, at All Saints Church in Wichita. The couple made their first home in Wichita before moving to Winfield in 1968. Shirley worked at Strother Field for Cessna wiring panels for about ten years. Most of her life was spent as a wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted homemaker. Mr. Selenke preceded her in death on April 6, 2011.
She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, baking, and cooking. She loved being with family. One of her greatest joys were her grandchildren.
Her family includes her children, Kathy Bryant of Wichita; Bruce Selenke and wife, Elaine of Oxford; Vickie Bechtel and husband, Paul of Osawatomie; her son-in-law Kevin Brown of Paola; her grandchildren, Amanda Selenke, Sarah Selenke, Christopher Selenke, Kami Smith and husband, Ryan, Kasie Bogart, Levi Bryant and wife, Hannah, Megan Rosario and husband, Ben, Kaitlyn LaKous and husband, Darren, Kimberly Brown, Kyle Brown, Grace Haney and husband, Colin, Jerrod Bechtel, Jasten Bechtel; and her 16 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a son Mike Selenke, a daughter Karen Brown, a granddaughter Cortney Brewer, and three siblings, Joey Mardis, Bill Cooper, and Virginia Achuff.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 26, 2024, at Holy Name Catholic Church under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. The Rosary will be prayed before the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Shirley's name to Gentiva Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
