Obituary

Shirley Lorena Schmidt, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Saturday morning, January 14, 2017 at the Joy Home in Oxford, Kansas.

Born November 20, 1926 in Geuda Springs, she was the daughter of Verne Joseph and Bertha Madeline (Teter) Holman. She was the first child born in the Geuda Springs Hospital. She attended grade school at the Rainbow Bend Grade School and then went to Winfield High School where she graduated in 1944. She was united in marriage to Roland E. Schmidt on July 10, 1946 in Wichita. The couple purchased their first farm in Udall and moved to Winfield in 1958. Shirley worked at the Register of Deeds beginning right out of high school. She was the Deputy Register of Deeds when she left in 1976. She and Roland purchased Southern Kansas L.P. Gas in 1972. Shirley was actively involved in running the family business working as the Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President. She also helped Roland on the farm for many years. Roland preceded her in death on April 28, 2015.

Shirley attended First Baptist Church in Winfield beginning in 1958. While there, she volunteered as the Financial Secretary. She later became a member of the First Baptist Church of Oxford. She was a member of the Dale Club in Dale, Kansas, the Merry Makers and BPW. She was a founding member of the Walnut Valley Quilters Guild as well as the Chit Chat Club. She loved to cook and would prepare food for large crowds including the harvest hands, haying crews and community events. She was known for her holiday meals, cherry pies and her weekly cinnamon rolls. Sha also enjoyed quilting and sewing and would sew many of her children's clothing, Barbie doll clothes and made furniture with antique sewing machines. She was an avid water skier. She slalom skied and did pyramids and was still actively skiing in her 60's. Shirley and Roland purchased land, designed and built a cabin in Mano, Missouri. They spent a lot of their spare time enjoying the cabin.

Her family includes:
Her children: Glenda Sue Schmidt of Winfield; Roger Edward Schmidt of Winfield; Lou Ann Johnson and husband, Steve of Wichita; Gaye Nell Young and husband, Dennis of Winfield;
Her grandchildren: Deanna and Renee, and step grandson, Cory Young and wife, Kara;
Her step-great grandson: Chance;
Her brother: Gaylord Holman of Geuda Springs; and
Many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Vernadine Keyes, brothers, Jerry Holman and Joseph Gilbert Holman and sisters-in law, Alice Lou Holman and Edda Holman.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery northwest of Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.

Memorials have been established in Shirley's name with the First Baptist Church of Oxford and with The Joy Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
