SHIRLEY ANN "NANA" TAPIA, 69, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, February 16, 2014 at her home.
Born on June 7, 1944 in Arkansas City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Alfred and Filomena (Hernandez) Garcia. She was raised and received her education in Arkansas City where she graduated from the Arkansas City High School in 1963. She also attended Cowley County Cosmetology School. Shirley was employed at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital as a certified nurses aide for a short time.
She was united in marriage to John J. Tapia on October 10, 1964 in Arkansas City. The couple made their first home in San Clemente California and later Capistrano, California and she was employed at the Laguna Beach Hospital as a certified nurses aide. Shirley and John moved to Winfield and she was employed at William Newton Hospital as a certified nurses aide for 20 years. Shirley worked at Snyder Clinic for 15 years serving as an assistant to Dr. James, working in surgery, and as a receptionist. She worked at Creative Community Living in home health care until becoming ill a few weeks ago.
Shirley was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and had served as President of the Holy Name Alter Society. She dearly loved her daily prayer time. Shirley had served as President of TOPS and was a Secretary for the Cowley County Democratic Party. She loved spending time with her family, tole painting and cooking including teaching at the Cowley County Fair. She was an avid University of Kansas fan and loved playing Phase 10.

Her brothers: Alfred Garcia Jr. and wife Mary of Arizona; Alexander Garcia and wife Vivian and Ruben Garcia all of Arkansas City, KS;
Her sisters: Teresa Krusor and husband Mark of Winfield, KS; and Alberta Esquivel of Texas, who was adopted at a young age;
Her sister-in-law: Kathy Garcia of Wichita, KS;
Her grandchildren: Anastasia Trobaugh, Bridget Tapia, Codie Trobaugh, Felicia Banning, Lauren Gardner, Molly Trobaugh, Ethan Tapia, Gabrielle Tapia, Wyatt Tapia, Parker Pearman, Madalyn Tapia, Kaylie Aikins and Kourtney Cummings; and
Numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Alfred Garcia; and her brother, Arthur Garcia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, February 21, 2014 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Shirley's name for Holy Name Catholic Church and Winfield Isle of Lights. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
