Obituary

SHIRLEY A. GARDNER, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, February 27, 2015 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Shirley Augusta (Hawley) Gardner was born April 26, 1933 to George Fitzhugh (Fitz) and Elsie May (Manahan) Hawley in Cambridge. She graduated from Cambridge (KS) High School.

Her first marriage (1953-1964) to Cecil Shore brought two daughters. In 1968, she married Albert Gardner and gained two stepdaughters. Shirley worked as a school lunch cook for Burden and Winfield (KS) schools and was active in both the Assembly of God and First Baptist Churches in Winfield. She led the sewing auxiliary for William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield and received the volunteer of the year award. She died February 27, 2015. Her husband, Albert, predeceased her.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters and stepdaughters and their families, including many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren: Cecilia Shore (husband Andrew Garrison) of Oxford, OH; Sheila Knapp (husband Marty) of Oxford, KS; Judy DeBruyn (husband John) of Cheyenne WY; and Joreta Bobbit (husband Barry) of Wichita, KS. Her life is also cherished by her siblings and their families: Lorna Reed of Hornbeck, LA; Joe Hawley of Midwest City, OK; and Richard (wife Kim) Hawley, of Pine City, NY; as well as the family of her sister, Juvene Allison, who predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., and the family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., that evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, KS, or the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

The family expresses gratitude to all those who have given kindness to Shirley during her extended decline, including friends and relatives and the Cumbernauld Village staff.
