Obituary

Sherrie Holmes, 78, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, January 18, 2022, at her home.

Born March 16, 1943, in Great Bend, Kansas, she was the daughter of James and Janet (Holland) Payne. As an infant, she was adopted by her step-father Richard Rowley. She was raised and received her education in Great Bend and Udall, graduating from Udall High School. Sherrie married Ray Holmes in 1962. The couple had three children and later divorced.

Sherrie worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and William Newton Hospital. She received her LPN license from Barton County Community College and later went to work for various care homes, retiring from ResCare. Sherrie loved to fish, especially with her mother-in-law Edith. She also enjoyed building and remodeling. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She had a hard childhood and overcame everything of her youth to be the mom she never had.

Her family includes her children, Shelley Harris of Winfield; Paul Holmes and Michelle Moberly of Udall; Chris Holmes and wife, Melissa of Udall; her sisters, Sheila Smith of Great Bend; Tamara Downs of Augusta; her grandchildren, Brian (Mandy) McDade, Brandon (Aundrea) McDade, Bradley Harris, Melissa Coash, Jordan (Laura) Johnson, Codey Kautz, Joaquin (Kristen) Rios, Lakin (Drew) Mariani, Elicia (Dustin) McGowan, Daylen Holmes, Braydee (Josh) Holmes, Kamren (Aaron) Holmes, Kaela Massey, Josh (Racquel) Massey, Mallory Moberly, John Moberly; her great grandchildren, Carson, Cayden, Jaxon, Austin, Rylin, Stetson, Brodi, Bentli, Vivian, Chevy, Hayden, Dean, Harly; and special caregivers, Christina Ellis, Tamara Herriage, Chandra Watts, and Betty Pierce.

In addition to her parents, Sherrie was preceded in death by a sister Rickie Weighouse.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 that evening.

Memorials have been established in Sherrie's name for the Cowley County Fire District #4 and for RiverCross Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
