Senator Greta Hall Goodwin, 74, of Winfield, passed away Wednesday evening, December 8, 2010 at Cumbernauld Village.
Born October 1, 1936 in Winfield, Kansas she was the daughter of Francis and Bernice (Martin) Hall. She was raised and received her education in Atlanta, Kansas graduating from Atlanta High School in 1954. She later attended Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, and graduated from Wichita State University with a Legal Assistant Degree.
Greta was united in marriage to James G. "Jim" Goodwin on November 21, 1954 in Atlanta. The couple made their home and raised their family in the Winfield area. Greta worked for thirteen years in the banking industry, twenty two years in the legal profession, and was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1992 before being elected to the Kansas State Senate in 1996. While serving as a Legislator Senator Goodwin served on several committees, including: Confirmation Oversight; Corrections and Juvenile Justice Oversight; Judiciary, Ranking Minority Member; State Building Construction; Transportation; and Ways and Means. Jim preceded her in death on February 6, 2009.
Greta was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated civic leader that was involved in many area project and organizations including: Board Member of Cowley County Safe Homes; Golden Key National Honor Society; Past President, Junior Federated Women's Club; Kansas Department of Corrections Winfield Community Relations Board; Kansas Association of Legal Assistants; National Association of Legal Assistants; Parents as First Teachers; Interagency Coordinating Council Member, Reach Preschool Developmental Center; Chair, United Fund Drive; Winfield Rotary; Advisory Board, Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
Her family includes:
Her sons: Craig Goodwin and wife, Vicki of Roseville, CA; Mark Goodwin of Winfield; Brian Goodwin and wife, Roberta of Wichita;
Her daughter: Sheri Helm and husband, Jeff of Derby;
Her 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and
Her sisters: Carolyn Aubert of Winfield; Dorothy Throndson of Pueblo, CO.
In addition to her parents and husband Greta was preceded in death by her brother Richard Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 13, 2010 at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, December 12, 2010. The family will greet visitors from 1:00 to 3:00 that afternoon.
Memorials have been established in Greta's name for the Alzheimer's Association and for Cumbernauld Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
