Obituary

Sandra K. "Sandy" Rutherford, 70, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, November 30, 2020 at William Newton Hospital.

Born May 1, 1950 in Coalinga, California, she was the daughter of Cecil and Dorothy (Wiggs) Kelley. She was raised and received her education near Dewey, Oklahoma and attended Dewey High School.

Sandy married Danny Edwards on January 3, 1967. The couple traveled with Danny's Navy career, living in California and Florida. They later returned to Dewey and in 1972, moved to Winfield, Kansas. Sandy worked at Wheeler's IGA, Gott Manufacturing, and Otasco before beginning her career as a caregiver at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She remained at the state hospital until its closing in 1997. Sandy and Danny had three children and later divorced.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth "Kenny" Rutherford on July 17, 1998 in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield and Sandy continued her caregiving career with Creative Community Living, and later Twin Rivers Developmental Services. She retired from Twin Rivers in 2012. Sandy was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed being involved with veteran's organizations and caring for others.

Her family includes her husband Kenny Rutherford of Winfield; her daughter Dana Bonnell and husband, Buck of Arkansas City; her step children, Tina Kurtz and husband, Keith of Mansfield, TX; Denise Huebert and husband, David of Halstead; her son-in-law Duane Brill of El Dorado; her sisters Barbara Hill-Wilson of Reno, NV; Lola Kelley of Oklahoma; her sister-in-law Sharon Kelley of Glenpool, OK; her grandchildren, Casey Snodgrass, Joseph Kurtz, Kaci Lewis, Teira Anderson, Alyssa Briley, Greg Edwards and Brianna Hand, Chandra Watts and husband, Rustin, Andrea Dillon, Joscalyne Bonnell, Bron Bonnell, Clark Bonnell; her 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Sandy was preceded in death by four brothers, Larry, Jerry, Danny, and Steve Kelley, her son Andrew Edwards, a daughter Sandy Edwards-Brill, and a nephew Johnnie Hill.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:30 A.M., Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Highland Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established in Sandy's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
