Obituary

Ruth Barger-Stevens, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City surrounded by family and loving caregivers.

Born January 26, 1931 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Ralph and Edyth (Barnhart) Asbury. She was raised in the Dexter area, attending Prairie Flower Country School.

She was united in marriage to Roy Barger on October 27, 1950. The couple spent the majority of their marriage dairy farming east of Dexter before settling in Winfield upon retirement. Ruth also worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, Grouse Valley Nursing Home in Dexter, and area care homes for the mentally disabled. Roy preceded her in death on February 7, 2008. Ruth married Asa Stevens on May 7, 2009 at the Fuller House of Prayer. The couple made their home in Winfield.

Ruth was a child of God. She worked very hard as a mother and wife on the family farm, hauling and baling hay, raising a garden and canning. She enjoyed picture puzzles, crosswords, playing cards with her grandchildren, and machine quilting.

Her family includes her husband Asa Stevens of Winfied; her sons, Gene Spoon and wife, Janet of Winfield; Dale Spoon and wife, Kathy of Winfield; Riley Duane Barger of Winfield; her daughter Cathy Smith of Broken Arrow, OK; her sister Charlotte Cousins; and 13 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband Roy, Ruth was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Asbury, Stanley Asbury, and Tom Asbury, a sister Florella Hankins, and a daughter Sara Barger.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Private family inurnment will take place at Prairie View Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Ruth's name for Hackney Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
