Obituary

Ruben Ruiz, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, August 21, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Wichita.

Born April 1, 1931 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Miguel and Ramona (Gutierrez) Ruis. He was raised and received his education in Winfield. Following school, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War, MIA/POW, in one of the biggest and bloodiest battles. He was honorably discharged on June 21, 1952. He joined the United States Air Force on August 21, 1953. Between the Army and Air Force, Ruben served his country for 21 years. He then served in the National Guard for over 20 years.

He married Matilda Cabrera on April 28, 1950 in Winfield. The couple later divorced and Ruben was remarried twice being preceded in death by both wives. He later remarried Matilda. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2018. Ruben worked as a truck driver and a machine operator for the Railroad among many other jobs.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and the American Legion Post 10. He loved motorcycles, enjoyed fishing and hunting and teaching the trade to his son.

His family includes his son Ricardo Ruiz of Winfield; his siblings, Ramona Torres of Arkansas City; Maggie Trillo of Arkansas City; Josephine Carrillo of Wichita; grandchildren, Morgan Horton, Christopher Horton and Kaylie McCully; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wives, Ruben was preceded in death by siblings, Joe Gutierrez, Sr., John Amezcua, Tony Amezcua, Pearl Gomez, and Jerry Ruiz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will greet visitors at the VFW at 2:00 P.M. that afternoon. The Rosary will be recited at the church on Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. A viewing will take place from 6:00 that evening until service time. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established in Ruben's name for Mission 22 and for Holy Name Catholic Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
