Obituary

ROY FRANCIS. JONES, 93, lifelong member of the Prairie View Community west of Atlanta, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2014 at his home.

Born on October 31, 1921, in Gordon, Kansas, he was the son of Raymond Francis and Bessie Mae (Gaskins) Jones. He attended Atlanta High School and graduated in 1942.

Roy was united in marriage to Pauline Mae Kennedy on December 1, 1945 in El Dorado, Kansas. They made their home in the Prairie View Community. He was an oil field worker, carpenter, farmer, rancher, and school bus driver.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the 45th Infantry Division in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations for 3 years, 3 months and 23 days. During the war, he fought in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was wounded on March 2, 1944, at Anzio and received the Purple Heart Medal. He was hospitalized for 63 days before returning to his unit. He also was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Bade. European-African-Middle Eastern service medal, Bronze Arrowhead, and the Bronze Star.

He was a lifetime member of the Prairie View United Methodist Church and past member of the Atlanta Lion's Club, Atlanta Coop Association, Atlanta Clown Club and leader of the Polo 4-H Club.

His family includes:

His sisters: Dorothy Strauhs of Douglass, KS; Darlene Riggs and husband Allen of Hill City, KS; JoAnn Keith and husband Paul of Penokee, KS;
His grandchildren: Doug Dennett and wife Kristie of Puyallup, WA; and JoLynn Parsons and husband Mike of Burden, KS;
His great-granddaughters: Amelia Dennett of Puyallup, WA; and Jessilyn Parsons of Burden, KS;
His step-granddaughters: Leah Velz and husband Charlie of Winfield, KS; and Megan Belisle and husband Steve of Bel Aire, KS;
His nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2009, his grandson, Shane Schadegg; his brothers, Clifford Jones and Stacy Jones; his sister-in-law, Betty Jones; and his brother-in-laws, Edwin Strauhs and Lionel Otto.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 17, 2014 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Military honors will follow at Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, November 16, 2014. The family will greet friends from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M.

Memorials have been established in Roy's name for the Prairie View United Methodist Church and the Atlanta Fire Department.
