Roy
Gilbert
February 22, 1933 – January 13, 2022
Roy Lynn Gilbert passed away on January 13, 2022, in Tucson, Arizona at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, on November 9, 2021. Also preceding him was his son Kent, in 2003.
He is survived by three siblings and four children, Scott (Mary Kay) of West Virginia, Gregg (Mary) of Arizona, Don of Nevada, and Laurie DeGeorge (Phil) of Colorado. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Roy was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Clark Raymond Gilbert and Bessie Jeanette Rives on February 22, 1933. He grew up in numerous towns in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas.
Both Roy and Nancy graduated from Winfield High School in 1951. Roy attended college in Oklahoma under a Navy ROTC scholarship, but a medical discharge removed him from that program. He returned to Kansas and married Nancy Jane Scott. They were married on July 3, 1953, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. In November that same year, he was drafted into the U. S. Army, as his medical condition had healed.
After a short period in the Army, and four children, the couple moved to San Diego, and Roy began work as a technical writer for General Dynamics. He later worked as a telephone systems specialist for Copley Newspapers, Blue Cross, then StarNet. He and Nancy were regularly active in their church, East San Diego Presbyterian Church. He began teaching English as a second language to refugees as a part of the church's outreach programs. Upon his wife's retirement, they returned to Winfield, Kansas, to be closer to extended family. In late 2019, they moved to Tucson, Arizona, for care and support.
He enjoyed chess, history, and teaching English. Although Roy and Nancy lived in four different states before settling in San Diego, California, they always considered Winfield, Kansas, as home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
Roy's service will be livestreamed on Winfield First Presbyterian Church's Facebook page. Their page may be accessed at the following link:
