Obituary

Roy Barger
A faithful and devoted husband, father and grandfather - Roy Barger will assuredly be missed.

Roy passed away Feb. 7, 2008, around 2:30 a.m. at the age of 84 with complications of a long bout with Gillian Barre Syndrome, which he contracted Dec. 1, 2007. He had been in St. Francias Hospital in Wichita since the beginning of the illness.

Roy and Ruth celebrated 57 years of marriage, spending the majority of their life together dairy farming east of Dexter. Upon retirement, they settled in Winfield, where they have lived for the past 10 years.

Roy was given the Range Land Management Award from the Cowley County Conservation District and served on the Dexter Township Board for about 16 years, including the watershed board.

He was known for maintaining quality fences, for outstanding stewardship of his property and cattle and for being an exemplary provisionary for his family. He made many contributions toward the upkeep and maintenance of the Hicks Chapel Church. A man of the highest integrity - one summer after raising a stray steer, Roy sold it and gave the money to the church, stating that it was not his to keep.

Roy never tired of keeping the family history alive, or pulling a humorous prank.

We are so grateful for the rich family heritage that has been handed down; and the hard work ethic that was exampled to us.

Roy is survived by his wife Ruth; their children, and their spouses - Gene Spoon and Janet Spoon, Winfield, Dale and Kathy Spoon, Winfield, Cathy and Steve Smith, Lone Tree, Colo., and Riley Duane Barger, Arlington, Texas; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as a great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at Miles Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. Monday with a private family burial at a later time at the South Prairie Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established for the Hicks Chapel United Methodist Church. Contributions can be sent to Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

May you rest in peace, Dad. We will miss you. See you soon. Love you lots.
