Ross D. "Popper" Burns' Obituary
ROSS D. "POPPER" BURNS, 82, of Douglass, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, September 17, 2008, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at St. Francis in Wichita.
Born on September 9, 1926, in Uniontown, Kansas, he was the son of William Harvey and Ida Bernadine (Newcomb) Burns. He was raised in Hiattville, Kansas, and educated at Pawnee Station, Kansas.
Ross was united in marriage to Ruby Pearl (Henning) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, on November 17, 1951. The couple made their first home in Pawnee Station, Kansas before moving to Wichita, and later making their home in Douglass.
As a young man, he did farm work, bailing hay and filling the silos. He then went to work for Cessna Aircraft, where he worked in sheet metal, retiring on September 1, 1991.
Ross joined the Douglass United Methodist Church in 1961. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge number 216 in Hiattville and later Lodge number 151 in Douglass. He was active in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed playing cards and was an avid John Deere collector.
His family includes:
His wife: Ruby of the home;
His sons: Doug Burns and wife, Kathy of Winfield; and John Burns and wife, Annette of Douglass;
His brother: Carl Tuggle of Fort Scott;
His grandchildren: Justin, Sara, Joe and LeAnne;
His step-grandchildren: Misty, Adam, Nate, Samantha, Brittany, Emily, Jacob and Jessica;
His great-grandchildren: Ayden and Tayton; and
His step great-grandchildren: Katlyn, Piercen, Corban and David.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Dustin Wayne, his brothers J.V. Norris, Franklin Lee and Joe Wayne and a sister Olive Ann.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at 2:00 P.M. at the Douglass United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Douglass Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Ross's name for the Douglass United Methodist Church, Douglass Masonic Lodge #151, and to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
