Obituary

James Ronald "Ronnie" Whiteman, 66, of Cambridge, Kansas, passed away, Tuesday afternoon, September 16, 2014 at his home.

Born November 9, 1947 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of James Russell and Verla (Sphar) Whiteman. He was raised and received his education in the Cambridge and Atlanta area, graduating from Atlanta High School in 1965. After high school he attended Cowley County Community College on a football scholarship.

Ronnie was united in marriage to Dorothy Strauhs on June 15, 1965 in Winfield, Kansas. The couple made their home in Cambridge where Ronnie helped his dad on the family farm and ranch. In the winters he would work as a roughneck in the oil fields. In 1981 he started D&W Well Service, and began servicing wells and producing oil. He continued farming, ranching and working in the oilfields the rest of his life.

He was a member of the Latham Masonic Lodge, the Windsor Township Board, USD 462 Recreation Commission Board, Rural Water District # 5 Board, 12 year USD 462 board member, and served on the Water Shed Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and supporting his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He loved spending time with his friends and family, especially spending Memorial Weekend with classmates and family.

His mother: Verla Whiteman of Burden;
His sisters: Linda Bartel and husband, Roger of Cambridge; Darlene Flegler and husband, Bill of Ponca City, OK;
His mother-in-law: Dorothy Strauhs of Douglass;
His sister-in-law: Carol Bell of Douglass;
His grandchildren: Tyler McMichael, Lucas McMichael, Melissa McMichael, Jeremy Whiteman, Jasiah Johnson, Morgan Bailey-Whiteman
His great grandchildren: Keagan Whiteman, Chance Martin and James Whiteman;
His step grandchildren: Shelby, Kylie and Lane Bannister;
His nephews: Shawn Bartel and Brady Bartel and wife, Missy; and
His nieces: Halli Murry Huffman; Krissy Burkholder and husband, Kevin; and Cassandra Caster and husband, Cliff.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his father, Russell Whiteman, his daughter, Amy Whiteman, his son, James Richard Whiteman, his father-in-law, Ed Strauhs, and his granddaughter, Kayla Dawn McMichael.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Atlanta Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.

A Memorial has been established in Ronnie's name for a scholarship fund at Central High School USD 462. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
