Obituary

Ronald Sloan, 84, of Dexter, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, July 30, 2019 at his home.

Born November 30, 1934 in Gainesville, Texas, he was the son of Lynn and Doris (Reddick) Sloan. He was raised and received his education in Arkansas City, Kansas, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1953. Following school, he worked for a short time for the railroad before joining the United States Army. While in the Army, Ron was stationed in Hawaii, working as an airplane mechanic. After his honorable discharge, Ron moved to Enid, Oklahoma where he attended Phillips University, graduating with a PhD in Theology.

Ron was united in marriage to Rhea Sloan on August 27, 1961 at the First Christian Church in Winfield. The couple made their first home in Enid while finishing their education. Ron began his ministry at a small church in Tecumseh, Oklahoma before moving to Paola, Kansas. In 1968, they moved to Wichita where Ron pastored Fairview Christian Church. In addition to pastoring the church, he served as chaplain for the Civil Air Patrol. He remained at the church for over 30 years, retiring in 1999. Following retirement, the couple moved to a farm near Dexter, Kansas. They raised cattle and other farm animals. After moving to Dexter, he served as chaplain for Harry Hynes Hospice until 2013. Rhea preceded Ron in death on June 14 of this year.

Ron was a member of Fairview Christian Church in Wichita. He enjoyed fishing, model trains, train rides through the mountains, and going to air shows. He had a pilot's license and enjoyed flying when he was younger.

His family includes his daughters, Kimberly Herndon of Rose Hill and fiancé, Mike Lay of Sedgwick; Jennifer Moreland and husband, Tony of Dexter; his brother Linnie Sloan and wife, Sue of Paris, TX; his sister Pat Brown and husband, Bob of Arkansas City; and his grandchildren, Wesley Green and wife, Jessica; Logan Green and wife, Amanda; Adam Herndon; Casey Hirner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Ron was preceded in death by a sister Cheryl Oestman, a grandson Isaac Herndon and a granddaughter Katelyn Green.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Dexter Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for Monday from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Ron's name for Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
