Obituary

Roland E. Sharp, 91, of Winfield, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2021, at William Newton Hospital.

Mr. Sharp was born September 30, 1929, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of Neil and Viola (Linebaugh) Sharp. He attended school in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1947.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948, attended radio school in Fort Monmouth, N.J., and was sent to Germany. He was a radio operator and teletype supervisor at European Command Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. He served for six years and attained the rank of staff sergeant.

After his discharge in 1954, he attended college at Pittsburg State University and then moved to Winfield, where he began employment at the Winfield Daily Courier. During that time, he was a teletype operator, linotype operator and commercial printing supervisor. In 1985, he left the Courier to begin employment at Hutto Printing Inc., from where he retired in 1994.

On April 12, 1959, he married Shirley Anne Riley at the First Christian Church in Winfield. They resided in Winfield all their married life. Mrs. Sharp preceded him in death on March 5, 2019.

His family includes his son, Tim Sharp (Gage Church) of Topeka; his daughter, Terri (Greg) Fiske of Arkansas City; his grandchildren: Brandy Beach, Amber (Brian) Flowers, Travis Beach, and Chad Beach; and his great grandchildren: Taj Birde, Aonika Beach, Kamrie Perry, Abigail Flowers, Emily Flowers, Ilyssa Flowers, Anabel Beach, Adrick Beach, Jack Beach, Atlas Beach, Coen Beach, and Noah Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 8 on Tuesday evening. The family will greet visitors that evening.

A memorial has been established in Roland's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
