Robert McClelland "Mac" McElhone, 75, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, went to be with his Lord, Tuesday afternoon, October 20, 2015, surrounded by his family and loved ones at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
Born June 7, 1940 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of John R. Brooks and Hazel Mae (Dunn) McElhone. He was raised and received his education in Waynesburg.
In 1957 he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country for over 20 years, retiring as a Staff Sergeant in October of 1977. While in the army he served all over the world including France and Germany. He also served two combat tours in Vietnam.
Bob was united in marriage to Mae Marie "Mamie" McCollum Miller on June 23, 1967 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. After retiring from the army, Bob brought his family back to Winfield, and began working for the Winfield Police Department, then Webster Engineering until 1983. In 1984, he began working in security at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and remained there until it's closing in 1998. Bob then went to work for the Department of Corrections in Winfield until retiring in 2003. After retiring, he worked as a care attendant for King's Treatment Center until totally retiring in 2008. Mamie preceded him in death on July 28, 2011.
He was a member of the Dexter Outreach Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, eating ice cream and was very artistic. He especially loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren's sporting and rodeo events.

His grandchildren: Tyler Williams, US Navy; Chad Williams, US Navy; Myranda Reeves and husband, David of Kansas City, MO; Isaiah McElhone of Wichita; and Cameron Thompson of Cedar Vale;
His nieces: Lou Ann Worthington and Jana Gendrich; and
His extended family: Diana Begley, Mason Begley, Matthew Smith, and Megan Sytnick.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his grandson, Christian Erik Knapp, his brothers, Francis, George and Paul, his sister, Pearl and his son-in-law, Corbin Thompson.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.
Memorials have been established in Bob's name for the Dexter Outreach Church and the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
