Obituary

Robert E. "Bob" Carter, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, October 6, 2020 at Winfield Senior Living.

Bob was born September 25, 1930 in Oberlin, Kansas to Charles E. and Stella M. (Gay) Carter. He moved to Norcatur, Kansas in 1934 where he attended grade school until November 1942 when he moved to Dodge City. He graduated from Dodge City High School in 1948. Bob tried to sign up for the military and was rejected due to his brother being missing in action.

Bob began employment with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in October 1948 in the Dodge City District. In July 1949, he was laid off and called back to work in February 1950. Bob worked in various towns all over Kansas until 1960 when he located in Parsons, Kansas. Bob was united in marriage to Marilyn Lydia Bretches on September 24, 1961 at the Dennis United Brethren Church in Dennis, Kansas. Due to technology changes, his job in Parsons was closed out in 1983 and he re-located to Winfield. He retired in 1996 with 47 years of service.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winfield as well as the Winfield Masonic Lodge #110. He was also a member of Kiwanis, the Walnut Valley Woodturners, and the Walnut Valley Woodcarvers in Arkansas City. While in Parsons, Bob was a member and chairman of Rural Water District #4, and a member and treasurer on the Walnut Township Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in WWII, six sisters, a niece, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and a dear grandson Byron in May 2020.

Survivors includes his wife Marilyn of Winfield; four sons, Gregory Carter of Thayer; Gary Carter and wife, Vonda of Parsons; Gerry Carter of Paola; Galen Carter and wife, Omara E. Ortiz Vazquez of Ozawkie; a granddaughter Stephanie Carter; great granddaughters, Lupe and Bella; three nephews; three nieces; three great nephews; six great nieces; and numerous great-great nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 12, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. A visitation is scheduled for that morning from 8:30 until service time. Interment will take place at 2:00 P.M. that afternoon at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas.

A memorial has been established in Bob's name for First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
