Obituary

Robert F. Banfill, 72, of Arkansas City died New Year's Day after a lengthy illness.

Born Feb. 7, 1944 in Crosby, Texas, the first child of Earline and Floyd Banfill, Bob (as his friends and family called him) grew up in Douglass, Kansas with his sister Cynthia. He made a mark as a wrestler in high school before joining the U.S. Navy, serving as a submariner.

In 1963, Bob married Sharon Rankin, of Winfield. The couple had two children, Ryan and Tara. Bob graduated from Southwestern College and earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas.

Guided by strong values of respect, fairness and justice, Bob dedicated his life's work to helping communities care for people who are abused, neglected, and at-risk. He helped countless people across America through his work in Wichita; Oklahoma City; Miami, Florida; New Haven, Connecticut; and Redlands, California. He returned to Kansas in the mid-1990s to care for family and finished his career serving seniors in South Central Kansas through his work with Kansas Social Services in Winfield.

In addition to his parents and stepfather Melvin Marshall, Bob was predeceased by his wife Sharon.

He is survived by his children Ryan Banfill, of Tallahassee, Florida and Tara Vickers, née Banfill, of Milton Keynes, England; his 5 grandchildren, Grant, Julia and Cole Banfill and Jensen and Jake Vickers; his sister Cynthia King, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law Charles and Sandra Rankin of Wichita and Larry and Terri Rankin of Petaluma, California.

The family would like to thank Larry and Terri Rankin, Carissa and Doug Honkomp, Margaret Jordan, Tony Rankin and all relatives and friends who have provided comfort and support over the past 18 months. We love all of you.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1 pm, Monday, Jan. 9 at Highland Cemetery in Winfield, preceded by visitation at Miles Funeral Service from 2 until 6 pm on Sunday.
