Robert Barrett Wimmer, age 88, died Friday, June 1, 2018 in Winfield, KS. Bob, affectionately known as "Doc," was born in Westfield, New Jersey on May 12, 1930, the only son of a Latin teacher, George Winfield Wimmer and Auline (Barrett) Wimmer.

Bob moved to Kansas in 1949 as a student at College of Emporia and obtained a degree in Biology in 1952. There he fell in love with a fellow undergrad Maxine Davis, and they married August 15, 1954. He went on to obtain a master's degree at Emporia State University in 1954 and a PhD. at Oklahoma State University in 1970. During his pursuit of his doctorate degree, he and Maxine welcomed three children.

"Doc" taught Biology at Southwestern College from 1959 to 1996. During his tenure, he received numerous Outstanding Teacher awards, and in 2012, he was honored to receive the Servant Leader Award. The Robert Wimmer Chair in Biology at Southwestern College was established in 2012.

"Doc" often said he never worked a day in his life because he enjoyed teaching so much, and the nearly 800 students with Biology majors who graduated from SC during his tenure experienced this gift both in and out of the classroom. He wasn't driven by monetary goals; as a natural teacher, he simply loved interacting with students, teaching through story telling. Hundreds of students also had memorable learning experiences during Jan Term trips "Doc" led.

Bob will long be remembered for his genuine warmth, storytelling, and wit. He was a man of many talents: skilled in woodworking, legendary gardening, and painting intricate biology panorama on gourds.

He is survived by his loving wife Maxine, daughter Bev (John Gilbert), son Brad Wimmer (Carol), and daughter Patty (Terry Burley) as well as his beloved five grandchildren Taryn, Evan, Jack, Joe and Michael.

At Bob's request, no public services will be held. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
