Richard "Lowell" Smith, 91, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 13, 2021, at the South Central Kansas Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Born July 31, 1930, in Latham, Kansas, he was the son of Ray and Jennie "Mabel" (Moss) Smith. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in Burden, graduating from Burden High School in 1948. After high school, Lowell worked at a couple of area mechanic shops before joining the United States Air Force in 1951. While in the Air Force, he volunteered to work as a mechanic during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Burden.
Lowell was united in marriage to Lois Y. Newbold on September 16, 1955, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. The couple made their home in Burden. In 1956, Lowell partnered with Delbert Peters and opened D&L Service and Jeep Sales. Lowell and Delbert worked together for over 45 years before selling their business and retiring in 2001. Lois preceded Lowell in death in January of 2009.
As a young man, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Burden. In addition to being a mechanic, Lowell enjoyed going to the sand dunes. He also loved his cats; he always had cats, inside and out!
His family includes his children, Mike Smith and wife, Suzi of Burden; Glenda Smith of Wichita; Bob Smith and wife, Hui Son of Winfield; his 5 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lowell was preceded in death by his sister Louise Osborn and a granddaughter Jessica Lee Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Burden Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials in Lowell's name for the Burden Fire Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
