Richard "Dick" Shaw, 71, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, February 23, 2017 at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Born September 7, 1945 in Savannah, Illinois, he was the son of Ben and Mary Elizabeth (Atkins) Shaw. He was raised and received his education in Wichita, graduating from West High School in 1961. Dick joined the United States Navy on March 7, 1966. He proudly served his country as Staff Sergeant and served his last tour aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. He transferred to the US Naval Reserve on October 10, 1969 and was honorably discharged on November 16, 1971.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Henkel on October 25, 1970 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in Winfield. He retired from the Winfield Police Department as a Lieutenant after 27 years of service in 2002. During this time, Dick also worked for EMS and was Director for the Cowley County Emergency Management Services. Following retirement, Dick worked for the Juvenile Justice Office.
Dick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as Elder. He was actively involved with Relay For Life and was Winfield's Community Champion for two years. He loved fishing, camping, cooking and smoking meats, and especially loved spending time with his family.

His daughters: Amy Shaw of Kenai, Alaska; Gloria Morey Gifford and finace, Mike Stice of Spain and her children, Gabriela, Olivia and Juliana;
His brother: Terry Shaw and wife, Zona of Wichita;
His sister: Carolyn Walters and husband, Paul of Wichita; and
His sisters-in-law: Marsha Cales and husband, Max of Arkansas City; Pam Kennedy of Nixa, MO; Vicki Carter-White and wife, Sharon of Santa Rosa, CA.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Shaw.
Services will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church. Private inurnment will take place at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a lunch prior to the service at 12:00 P.M. at the church. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in Dick's name for Trinity Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
