RAY V. WALKER, 71, of Winfield, Kansas, a retired barber, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 9, 2013 at his home.
He was born to the late Paul and Mildred Walker on July 13, 1941 in McPherson, Kansas. Ray graduated from North High in Wichita, Kansas in 1959. Upon high school graduation he worked at a filling station until entry into the U.S. Navy in 1961.
Ray earned an ADR3 status in the Navy and served the Far East during the Vietnam Era. One of his proudest accomplishments in the Navy was earning his Air Crew Wings while stationed in Atsugi, Japan. Ray received and honorable discharge in 1967.
Ray married Shirley A. Landwehr on October 12, 1968 in Winfield, Kansas. He entered the Kansas School of Barbering in 1969 and opened the Mug and Brush Barber Shop in Winfield on October 15, 1975 working until his retirement on February 15, 2013.
Ray was an active member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, Legion Riders and Holy Name Catholic Church. He loved drag racing, restoring old cars, going to car shows, home and garden projects, and sponsoring both youth and adult sports teams.
Survivors include: Shirley Walker of Winfield; His children: Matt Walker and wife, Michelle; Nick Walker and wife, Mendy, all of Spring, Texas; and Gretchen Walker of Winfield, Kansas;
His 9 grandchildren: Samantha, Abigail, Ethan, and Bryce Walker; McKenzie, Devon, Zachary, and Branden Walker; Aaron Walker; His brother: Paul Walker and wife, Kaye of Wichita, Kansas; and His sister: Debbie Bein and husband, Ron of Rockwall, Texas.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, Megan Moll, a nephew, Doug Walker and a great nephew, Aaron Walker.
A Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rosary will be recited on Thursday evening at 7:00 P.M. at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A Memorial has been established in Ray's name for Holy Name Catholic Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
