RAY L. RUTHERFORD, 96, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, August 2, 2012 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Born on May 31, 1916 in Osenbrook, North Dakota, he was the son of Oscar and Lottie (Agar) Rutherford. At the age of 5, Ray and his family moved to Winfield where he received his education, graduating from Winfield High School in 1936. His first job was in 1928 picking up golf balls at the Winfield Country Club for 50 cents a day for the pros. In 1932 he began cutting grass with a team of Buckskin horses and took care of the club house grounds. Ray worked as a caddie also.
He met Theora Sowers at the club after she began employment there. They were united in marriage on March 28, 1937 in Winfield. In addition to working at the country club, Ray was employed at Gott Corporation and Pettit Cleaners. He was a salesman for two bread companies and one ice cream company and also worked for two grocery stores. In the late 1940's he worked with his stepfather, building the first set of nine holes at the club. He took over groundskeeper helping build the second set of nine holes in the 1970's and retired in 1979. Mrs. Rutherford preceded him in death on June 15, 2008.
Ray was a lifetime member of the Winfield Elks Lodge. He enjoyed his family and was an avid golfer.

His 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 13 great-greatgrandchildren and 3 on the way.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Martin Rutherford; his grandchildren, Sandy Marie Brill and Andrew Dale Edwards; his brother, Leslie Rutherford and his sister, Mabel Crabtree.
Graveside services will be held 9:30 A.M., Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5:00 t0 8:00 P.M., Friday, August 3, 2012.
A memorial has been established in Ray's name for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
