Obituary

Ralph King, 94, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Wednesday evening, November 18, 2020 in Conway Springs.

Born July 9, 1926 in rural Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Thomas "Ervin" and Angeline (Knox) King. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1944. Following high school, Ralph worked at the Winfield Flour Mill before being drafted into the United States Army. He entered basic training on November 27, 1944. He was part of the 84th Division in the European Theatre of Operation and participated in the invasion of Germany. He later transferred to the National Guard and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in the early 1960's.

Ralph was united in marriage to Loretta P. Weathers on September 21, 1946 in Winfield. Following the war, Ralph returned to work at the Winfield Flour Mill and worked as the assistant manager. He was transferred to the Kingman Mill in 1953. In 1965, Ralph and Loretta moved to Garden City for a short time before making their home in Wichita in 1966. Ralph worked at the Alfalfa plant for a year and then worked at Coleman, Beech, and Boeing in purchasing. Loretta preceded him in death on November 7, 2019.

Ralph attended the Baptist church in Winfield, Kingman, and Wichita. He was very involved in church, serving as Deacon and singing in the choir. Ralph was also a member of the American Legion and served as President of the Chamber of Commerce while in Kingman. He was a scout master when his children were young. Ralph loved to stay busy and worked two jobs the majority of the time. He taught his family good work ethics.

His family includes his children; Sonja Thompson and husband, Don; Rhonda Bryant and husband, Brad; Randall King and wife, Rhonda; Richard King and wife, Patty; Valerie Engelken; Rodney King and wife, Jana; his sister Martha Spencer; his 26 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Ralph was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond "Scotty" King, Roy M. King, and John "Robert" King, and sisters, Esther Friend, Inez Foster, Edith Wells, and Thelma Brown.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. The service will be livestreamed via YouTube for those not able to attend. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Ralph's name for the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
